Description

Hennie Comfort is eighty-six and has lived in the mountains of Middle Swan, Colorado, since before it was Colorado. Nit Spindle is just seventeen and newly married. She and her husband have just moved to the high country in search of work. It’s 1936 and the depression has ravaged the country and Nit and her husband have suffered greatly. Hennie notices the young woman loitering near the old sign outside of her house that promises “Prayers For Sale.” Hennie doesn’t sell prayers, never has, but there’s something about the young woman that she’s drawn to.

From Civil War days until the 1930s, Hennie Comfort savors the joys of Colorado mountain life. As the protagonist prepares to leave her home to reside with her daughter, a young woman moves to the gold-dredging town. As Hennie shares survival secrets and long-hidden stories, she reveals surprising tales of her youth. Maggi-Meg Reed brings to mind a wise and cherished grandmother in her depiction of Hennie, complete with a timeworn raspiness. As the story moves across the years, however, there is little distinction between Hennie's youthful and mature voices. Innocence and delight in discovery spark Reed's reading of young Nit. As the women bond, the listener is treated to a beautiful portrayal of female lives in a challenging time and place. J.J.B. (c) AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine
